Story:
My name is Angi, I’m 24 and I’ve been doing athletics all my life — high jump and heptathlon are my specialities. My grandmother was a successful long jumper, so my grandfather founded a club for her at home, where my parents are also active today. So I was literally born into athletics and have been part of it from the very beginning.
Last year a friend got me into winter sports, and now I’m also trying skeleton — sliding head-first down an ice track. My life is pretty crazy: I work as a sports journalist to look behind the scenes of other female athletes’ elite sport and give them a voice and a platform. On top of that, I’m studying for a master’s degree in geography and doing polar research. My motto is: you never know until you try.
When I set my mind to something, I see it through. My coaches say my greatest strength is the will to achieve even what seems impossible. As a high jumper I’m at a physical disadvantage — at 160 cm I’m quite small, and I was often told I’d never get a chance. And yet here I am. I’m also a strong advocate for changing the way athletes are selected and for a greater focus on mental health and a positive environment — because I’ve seen with my own eyes how performance pressure and weight pressure have broken many young female athletes around me.
